Most of us find it uncomfortable to think about a time when we won’t be able to make decisions for ourselves. For the person living with dementia, there will come a time when it will be difficult for them to express their wishes or make informed decisions about their lives. Conversations about future wishes with the person living with dementia can be really hard, but starting to talk about preferences and preparing documents for the future gives peace of mind and can help you both feel a little more in control.
For example, it is very important for you both to have an up-to-date will, and someone appointed to make decisions about financial, legal, medical and care arrangements on your behalf if either of you are unable.

Dementia Australia has comprehensive information about planning for the future. While this is written with the person living with dementia in mind, the topics also are relevant for carers.
