5.9 Ensure plans for the future are in place

For the person with dementia, there will come a time when it will be difficult for them to express their wishes so it is important to have plans for the future in place

Many people find it uncomfortable to think about a time when they won’t be able to make decisions for themselves. However, it is very important to have an up-to-date will, and someone appointed to make decisions about financial, legal, medical and care arrangements on your behalf if you are unable.

For the person with dementia, there will come a time when it will be difficult for them to express their wishes. Conversations with family about these issues can be really hard but starting to talk about preferences and preparing documents for the future gives peace of mind.

The information in the next pages is not legal advice. It is an overview of some of the documents and plans you need to have in place to help you move forward with confidence.

Dementia Australia has comprehensive information about planning for the future.  While this is written with the person living with dementia in mind, the topics also are relevant for carers.
