3.17 Use services to support living at home

Use services to ensure the person you support can keep living successfully at home

Private services

If you can afford them, private cleaners, gardeners and handymen can help your person maintain their home and garden. The cleaners, gardeners and handymen can do jobs that might be difficult or dangerous for you or your person such as making beds, cleaning blinds and mowing lawns.

  • Private cleaners cost around $25 to $50 per hour.
  • Private gardeners cost from $25 to $100 an hour depending on what you need them to do.
  • Private handymen charge between $40 and $100 an hour.

To find a private service, ask your neighbours and local friends for recommendations. Private services are often advertised in the local newspaper, through letterbox drops, and online such as Airtasker.

Government services

Your person may be eligible for subsidised help through their home care package via My Aged Care or, if under 65 years old when your person developed dementia, the National Disability Insurance Scheme. For more information, visit:
